I grew up watching the 90's Bulls. There's a lot of us out there that did. As a kid and as an adult, watching the squad play inspired and moved us. As kids, we use to watch the Championship VHS tapes on repeat with a couple of hours of basketball in the backyard in-between viewings. It was something in the story that motivated you to get active and practice. With or without a ball, you would go through the motions aiming to gain better control, all in preparation for your moment on the court.
Any societal biases aside, the game knew no color, no gender. It was tough, but if you could show you were tough enough to compete you had your place on the court and if you weren't, there was always a chance to get better, a chance to improve to find moments of success.
My personal connection with the game now is like that of business and leading an organization to success. This connection, honestly, came to mind as I was browsing Unsplash for photos and I came across the one above. The connection to it was instant and memorable. Regardless of whether I was good at the game, you could find me dribbling an imaginary ball. The same was the case with many of my peers.
So what's the connection and what does basketball have to do with business and leading a team? How is vision involved and what the heck is Vision Manual anyway?
Allow me to start backwards. The Vision Manual is the knowledge platform for Onirico. Onirico is the company behind this website and many other projects online. Onirico essentially means future-directing. It comes from the Greek 'Oneiroi.' The dream and nightmare spirits that guided many Greek heroes through their journeys and took the form of dreams and vision. Hence why Vision is critical to how we consult businesses for growth and impact.
We believe vision is crucial in building long lasting, entities, brands, and organizations. The Vision Manual is our platform for sharing stories, lessons, and technical know-how in leading a team to success. It's also the current home of Onirico – as we saw it was fit to not only share the knowledge, but to share our current experiences as we continuously build and consult (that's what the 2019 link is for).
And basketball.. well it works. The 90s Chicago Bulls' History is littered with analogies and lessons. To pull off 6 championships in a decade requires skill, team composition, culture, creativity, awareness, authenticity, authority and many other elements. But don't worry, we're not going to write using just sport analogies. We will be telling the stories that best covers those significant elements in business development. This is a learning platform for visionaries. A place to compare notes or to learn how to put into the practice the necessary qualities of a great vision.
The end game of this site is to ultimately be turned into a book or series of books. At the time of this post, we have already authored a good 60-70% of a workbook that brings together market strategy, design strategy and business design. This workbook will be offered as a workshop and we are always available for consults on a case by case basis.
In the coming weeks, we will begin releasing more posts where you can learn what it takes to create and develop powerfully effective visions.
In the meantime, check out what we're building in 2019.
